Podcast 95: Why the Housing Market Feels Like a Game of Monopoly
Remember Monopoly? One person wins big. Everyone else gets crushed.
That game is starting to look a lot like the real estate market today — especially in Toronto. For many working-class and middle-income families, the dream of owning a home feels like it’s slipping away. But why?
The Real Rules of the Game
Let’s be real — we’re living in a system that rewards asset ownership.
If you already own property, stocks, or other appreciating assets, you’re probably doing just fine. If you don’t, it’s becoming harder and harder to catch up.
Here’s what’s driving the divide:
Inflation keeps eating away at your purchasing power.
Interest rates make it harder to finance new purchases.
Housing supply remains tight, especially in urban centres.
Wage growth isn’t keeping pace with the cost of living.
At the same time, immigration is growing the population faster than we’re building homes, and construction starts are way down. Investors are sitting on the sidelines. Developers are hitting pause. And average buyers? Many feel stuck renting while watching prices rise out of reach.
So, What’s the Answer?
It’s easy to get frustrated. Some blame landlords. Others blame the government. But the truth is, the system is complex — and change is slow.
In the meantime, the best move for most people is to get on the asset ladder — even if it’s a small step.
You don’t have to become a millionaire overnight. But if you can own something — anything — you’ll be playing the game from a better position than sitting on the sidelines.
Whether that means co-buying, house hacking, or just buying your first condo and holding it long-term — it can make all the difference.
